Young people, especially through their use of social media platforms such as Facebook, Snapchat, or Instagram, are frequently confronted with images that convey contradictory messages. The workshops held in photography exhibitions support young people in critically examining images and their contexts of production, rather than accepting the messages they communicate as unquestioned truth or fact.
In this module, participants aged 12 and above visit a photography exhibition together with facilitators trained in media education. The exhibitions focus on socially relevant topics such as human rights, climate protection, and aspects of globalization in the Global North–South context. The workshops give participants the opportunity to explore complex issues in depth and introduce them to a variety of stories through the medium of photography. Through different exercises, they are encouraged to consider images in terms of their creation, reception, and presentation. Together with the facilitators, the young people develop background knowledge and possible courses of action, while gaining new perspectives on global interconnections and on photography as a medium.
